This book provides: the general principles of laytime and demurrage; in-depth analysis of laytime clauses and the different ways in which time is allowed for loading and discharging ships - both fixed laytime and customary laytime; important detailed analysis of the rules relating to commencement of laytime in berth, dock and port charters, including important developments in this part of the law since the last edition In-depth coverage of why laytime can be suspended, for instance: adverse weather condition, holidays, strikes and other expected periods; other laytime matters, such as when laytime ends, averaging and reversing and the special rules relating multiple charters. Whilst laytime has it own set of rules, there are different and equally important rules that apply once laytime has expired and the ship has gone on demurrage. These rules are set out clearly in the section on demurrage. The final part of this book deals with such matters as despatch, detention and frustration.
