Computer networks, once devoted primarily to research, are now an integral part of modern life. People rely on them to do real work, such as handling bank transactions or making airline reservations. Routers and bridges are needed to form networks of reasonable size. To manage a network it is necessary to understand these devices.

This is A great way to learn in depth concepts of raw data transfer at layer 1 layer 2.

This book was written two decades ago and it's a great go to book for network administrators today Kinda blows out the theory that Technology moves too fast for people to keep up with. This book is clearly written and well illustrated. It is an essential building block for achieving the kind of understanding of network infrastructure that is necessary to architect and troubleshoot well. The book begins with thorough background theory, progresses through current implementations and concludes with a discussion of when one should be used over the other.

It also describes token ring source route bridging for those that are new to it. I would class it as an intermediate to advanced level networking text.

Some familiarity with layered networking models is essential to understand the differences between bridging and routing and appreciate the sometimes subtle but profound differences between implementations. A must read for the serious network engineer - you'll discover something new every time you pick it up. People who complain about a lack of "practical" information in the book miss the point.

This is one of the best sources of information on the design of network routing protocols that exists. This book is indispensable if you are involved in a software development project that benefits from routing, at any level. The book describes a tool network routing and gives modern best-practice advice for how to implement that tool. David M. Kurtiak kurtiak eclipse. This review applies to the Second Edition published in September Following the tradition of Radia Perlman's first edition, this update covers just about all of the current and most pertinent aspects of data communications protocols.

I view it as an indispensable resource, and is highly authoritative within the discipline and topics covered. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. Alexa Actionable Analytics for the Web. DPReview Digital Photography.

Interconnections: Bridges, Routers, Switches, and Internetworking Protocols

Radia Perlman's Interconnections is recognized as a leading text on networking theory and practice. It provides authoritative and comprehensive information on general networking concepts, routing algorithms and protocols, addressing, and the mechanics of bridges, routers, switches, and hubs. You will gain a deeper understanding of the range of solutions possible and find valuable information on protocols for which documentation is not readily available elsewhere. Written by the inventor of many of the algorithms that make switching and routing robust and efficient, Interconnections, Second Edition offers an expert's insight into how and why networks operate as they do. Perlman describes all of the major networking algorithms and protocols in use today in clear and concise terms, while exploring the engineering trade-offs that the different approaches represent.

Interconnections: Bridges, Routers, Switches and Internetworking Protocols, Second Edition

Interconnections is aimed at computer science students studying networking: it covers fundamental concepts and basic theory, and includes a set of "homework" problems with each chapter. But it is solidly grounded in real-life experience — Perlman has spent years designing and implementing network protocols and algorithms most notably the spanning tree algorithm used in most bridges and uses that experience to provide practical illustrations of the theory. She is also fun to read, being prepared to laugh at things that deserve it and to offer personal opinions, sometimes quite bluntly. It is configuration-intensive. Routes can be permanently unstable.
