Gottlob Frege was a German logician, mathematician and philosopher who played a crucial role in the emergence of modern logic and analytic philosophy. He invented modern quantificational logic, and created the first fully axiomatic system for logic, which was complete in its treatment of propositional and first-order logic, and also represented the first treatment of higher-order logic. In the philosophy of mathematics, he was one of the most ardent proponents of logicism, the thesis that mathematical truths are logical truths, and presented influential criticisms of rival views such as psychologism and formalism. His theory of meaning, especially his distinction between the sense and reference of linguistic expressions, was groundbreaking in semantics and the philosophy of language.

Gottlob Frege

Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege b. Frege then demonstrated that one could use his system to resolve theoretical mathematical statements in terms of simpler logical and mathematical notions. One of the axioms that Frege later added to his system, in the attempt to derive significant parts of mathematics from logic, proved to be inconsistent. Nevertheless, his definitions e.

Function and Concept

The article involves a clarification of his earlier distinction between concepts and objects. In general, a concept is a function whose value is always a truth value A relation is a two place function whose value is always a truth value Frege draws an important distinction between concepts on the basis of their level. Frege tells us that a first-level concept is a one-place function that correlates objects with truth-values First level concepts have the value of true or false depending on whether the object falls under the concept. Second order concepts correlate concepts and relations with truth values.

Gottlob Frege (1848—1925)

He worked as a mathematics professor at the University of Jena , and is understood by many to be the father of analytic philosophy , concentrating on the philosophy of language , logic , and mathematics. Though he was largely ignored during his lifetime, Giuseppe Peano — and Bertrand Russell — introduced his work to later generations of philosophers. His contributions include the development of modern logic in the Begriffsschrift and work in the foundations of mathematics. His book the Foundations of Arithmetic is the seminal text of the logicist project, and is cited by Michael Dummett as where to pinpoint the linguistic turn. The former argues for two different types of meaning and descriptivism. In Foundations and "The Thought", Frege argues for Platonism against psychologism or formalism , concerning numbers and propositions respectively. Russell's paradox undermined the logicist project by showing Frege's Basic Law V in the Foundations to be false.
